A question that frequently arises when moving in: should a Mezuzah be fixed on the door leading to this outdoor space? The answer depends on several technical criteria defined by Halakha.

The basic principle: A place of residence

The Mezuzah commandment applies to doors of rooms that serve as a “dwelling” (Dirat Keva). For an opening to a balcony to require a Mezuzah, two main conditions must generally be examined: the presence of a roof and the surface area of the room.

1. The roof issue (Skhakh)

According to the majority of decisors, a room or space is considered a “dwelling” only if it has a roof.

Covered balcony: If there is another balcony above yours (acting as a roof), the obligation is more formal.

Open-air terrace: If the space is completely open to the sky, many opinions (notably the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch) hold that there is no strict obligation, though it is often recommended to place one without a blessing as a sign of piety.

2. The minimum area

To be considered a “room” requiring a Mezuzah, the space must measure at least 4 cubits by 4 cubits (approximately 4 m²). A small, narrow balcony of the “balconette” type generally does not require a Mezuzah.

Should a blessing be recited?

The golden rule in case of doubt about the blessing is: Safek Berakhot Lehakel (in doubt, abstain from blessing).

Mandatory case: Covered balcony of more than 4 m² with clear door jambs (Chamachot). Here, the blessing is recited.

Doubt case: Open terrace or small balcony. Place the Mezuzah without reciting the blessing, or fulfill the obligation by reciting the blessing on another door of the house (such as the front door).

Where to place the Mezuzah?

When exiting to the balcony, the Mezuzah should be placed on the right-hand vertical edge of the door (facing outward). It thus protects the passage from the inside of the house to its exterior extension.

FAQ: Balconies and terraces

My balcony is a “Soucca” terrace, is a Mezuzah required?

Yes, because even though it is open part of the year for the festival of Sukkot, it remains a functional extension of your residence during the rest of the year.

Is a Mezuzah required for a closed veranda?

Absolutely. A veranda closed with glass is considered a separate room of the house, requiring a Mezuzah with blessing.

And for a garden?

The door leading from the house to a private garden requires a Mezuzah, as the garden is considered a space regularly used by the inhabitants.

Conclusion

The Mezuzah is a spiritual protection for the entire home. Although the laws concerning balconies are nuanced, the custom is to honor each important passage of the home with the presence of a sacred scroll. In case of doubt about the specific configuration of your terrace, it is always best to show a photo or plan to your rabbi.

{“@context”:”https://schema.org”,”@type”:”FAQPage”,”mainEntity”:[{“@type”:”Question”,”name”:”Should a Mezuzah be placed on a roofless terrace?”,”acceptedAnswer”:{“@type”:”Answer”,”text”:”Yes, because it is the door leading to the terrace that matters.
