Description
- We usually recite this psalm before Baruch Sheamar and it is good to recite it in the form of a menorah; this is considered as if we had lit the menorah in the Bet Hamikdash, and it is a segula for having a successful day. The number of verses corresponds to the number of branches of the menorah and the number of words to the components of the menorah, c-a-d 49. The Hida and others even recommend reading it on a parchment.
- The Hida relates that this psalm was inscribed on a gold plaque carried by King David on his shield when he went to war, and that David contemplated the deep meaning of this psalm and won his wars.
- Some works recommend its reading even outside of the morning prayer.
- Some write it on a parchment and place it on the inner side of the holy ark’s door, as a segula to protect the community. The Ari explains that recitation protects from plague and from evil decrees
